Our mom was first diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2010. Her treatment included a lumpectomy and 33 rounds of radiation. She worked all throughout her treatment and Mom was told on Dec. 31st, 2010 that her cancer was in remission. We thought this battle was over.
Unfortunately, the dreaded word cancer came back into our lives in January of this year. Due to the fact that Mom cannot receive radiation again in that area, the treatment plan is way more invasive with a longer recovery period.
The first part of the treatment plan includes an 8-hour surgery on May 7th at Dublin Methodist Hospital in Columbus. During this surgery Mom will have a double mastectomy, with a DIEP Flap to the right breast. The surgeons will cut skin, fat, and blood vessels from her abdominal region and transfer this tissue to her right breast. The surgeons need to do this type of procedure because her right breast was damaged due to radiation from before.
She will not be able to work for 4-6 weeks after this major surgery and will have to have several more surgeries in the next 9-12 months.
Our mom is such a fighter and one of the strongest, most positive women we know, but let’s be honest this recovery is going to be hard. She is not going to be able to lift anything heavier than a glass of water for two weeks and will not be able to use any of her stomach muscles (due to the large incision on across her abdomen) for 4 weeks.
We would love to raise $10,000 to help ease our mom’s financial burdens so she can focus on a safe, speedy recovery. Any and all donations would mean so much to our family. Thank you!
