Hidden History of a People's Hero

Support us in bringing our paper theatre show - "Escape was on Everyone's Mind: The Tale of Jack Sheppard" - to new audiences

Celebrate a hero of the people
Come to 18th Century London …corrupt law enforcers …dodgy politicians… well fed bankers …sound familiar?
Jack Sheppard laughed in the face of them all – and the people of London laughed with him.

Who was Jack?
- He stole to live
- He took his freedom – no prison could hold him
- He became more famous than the King of England,
- His name was spoken across the globe

IT'S TIME TO TELL HIS STORY AGAIN

For more information about Jack's amazing escapes

Who are Otherstory?
We're a Bristol-based collective of puppeteers, activists and musicians. We want to tell stories that are playful and political: stories that run counter to the narratives of the powerful.  You can see more of our work at otherstory.org

Escape was on Everyone’s Mind: The Tale of Jack Sheppard is a 70 minute show combining paper theatre and remakings of traditional folk songs. You can see a trailer here:

What people have said about the show:
"Feeling totally inspired after witnessing Otherstory's wonderful paper theatre show...featuring endless inventive and quirky paper animation techniques.  Catch them if you can..."

"Beautiful sets accompany a funny but searing critique of mercantile London in the 18th Century via the hidden history of the peoples' hero Jack Sheppard.”
Roger Ball, Bristol Radical History Group

"Intimate, intricate and insurrectionary...The tale of Jack Sheppard was brought to us  in innovative and humorous ways, set in a Hogarth-likelandscape of love, intrigue and revolution."
Dr Hilary Ramsden, George Ewart Evans Storytelling Symposium

With your support...
...in the coming year we will work with the Bristol Radical History Group and Windmill Hill Woodcraft Folk group (part of the national co-operative youth organisation) to stage this paper theatre show in venues in the South West and beyond. We will take the show to the Beverley puppet festival in Yorkshire.  We will offer puppetry workshops to Woodcraft Folk groups and hold post-show discussions with local radical history speakers.
