Richard Pearson's Memorial Fund

Our dear friend Richard who so courageously fought the battle against metastatic prostate cancer, fell asleep in the Lord early in the morning on December 18, 2014. Anyone who knew Richard is better for having done so. His wife of fifteen years, Jun, who is precious to many of us, was his best friend and he, hers. Together they had a beautiful daughter, Asia, who was the light of her father's life. Richard has two adult children from a previous marriage who will also deeply miss their father.

To know Richard was to know a devoted family man and a man of amazing principle and faith. Of his many talents, his wit and sense of humor will be especially missed and fondly recalled by many. His accomplishments in the martial arts and as a Shihan are astounding. His work ethic and quality were unmatched. He put incredible effort into every task he undertook, including his friendships. Listening to his peers speak about the kind of person he was and how he so positively impacted their lives brings one to tears. His family and friends remain in awe of the courage, dignity, and grace with which he fought his battle against cancer. From the moment of his diagnosis, his wife Jun was a tireless advocate for Richard's healing and did everything humanly possible to improve his odds. She researched the latest in nutritional advice and replicated it in her kitchen even when she was completely exhausted. She sought out and consulted the best cancer physicians and clinical trials across the country. She attended nearly every doctor's visit, as well as chemotherapy and radiation treatments. She was there during the inevitable hospitalizations. She massaged Richard's aching limbs and cradled him when the cancer took hold of his body. She cared for their daughter and made sure there were as few as possible interruptions to the normal life of a 10-year-old little princess. Jun did all of this while herself working each day as a physician assistant, taking care of others who are ill. Never once during this journey did either Jun nor Richard complain or let circumstances crush their determination. In the end, Richard took his rest in his own home, on his terms. Finally, he is without pain.

While sadly we cannot bring Richard back, we can help Jun and Asia begin their healing without the daunting distractions of finances. Cancer ravages not only the patient but also the security we feel when our families are intact. Your contributions are unimaginably appreciated, especially during this holiday season. With the deepest of gratitude, thank you all for honoring this exceptional man and his legacy.
