This year Amanda and Chris Hawthorne were so thrilled when they found out they were expecting their second daughter in March of 2015. They were so excited to share the news with their 4 year old daughter Lilly. She couldn't wait to become a big sister!
Amanda's pregnancy was a little rough to begin with, but was going along as normal. Then, on Thanksgiving weekend 2014, Amanda was diagnosed with Pre-Eclampsia just shy of 25 weeks pregnant. Amanda's blood pressure and protein levels were extremely high and on November 30th she was admitted into hospital. She was in the hospital for 4 days before being released. After being sent home, her blood pressure continued to rise over the next few days and she was admitted into the hospital once again. Amanda was kept under constant monitoring and testing for the next few weeks.
A team of doctors and specialists started working together to try to keep both Amanda and her baby alive. As Amanda's blood pressure would rise to dangerous levels, doctor's were worried about seizures and stroke. The baby was too small to deliver and Amanda was diagnosed with a failing placenta. The baby was not growing and responding as much as it should and was not getting the blood flow and oxygen it needed to continue. It was a waiting game for weeks. Every time doctors thought either Amanda or the baby was in grave danger, they began to prepare for surgery and they put Amanda on a magnesium drip to protect her and her baby.
After nearly a month in the hospital, Amanda's blood pressure just wouldn't come down. The magnesium was making Amanda extremely sick and with her blood pressure being so high, doctors weren't sure how much more her body could take. Finally, the doctors made the call to deliver the baby at just 27 1/2 weeks along. Amanda gave birth to her precious baby, Violet Noel Hawthorne, on December 18th. Violet weighed just 1 lb. 6 oz. Amanda is still in the hospital recovering from the surgery and Baby Violet is in the fight for her life in the NICU. Every hour that passes for Baby Violet is a miracle. She is under constant care.
The Hawthorne Family has a very long road ahead. Baby Violet will be in the hospital for months and once she is discharged, she will need years of specialized care.
Amanda is a stay-at-home mommy and Chris has to take a lot of time off work to take care of his family. A lot of people have asked how they can help support Baby Violet and her growing needs. I am setting up this page to give updates on Baby Violet and also to help alleviate some of the financial stress and strain on this family. Even a $1 donation will help them get through this.
