Kristen's Trust Fund

Crushed by a tree while playing in her Voluntown backyard, a three-year-old is slowly recovering from a traumatic brain injury.

The family of Kristen Fedor talked for the first time about what happened and how the community is rallying around them.

Now, Kristen Fedor can sit up on her own. Kristen's parents Richard and Juta Fedor explain up until last April 25 she was like every other energetic and curious child.

A tree fell on Kristen Fedor while playing outside in her yard with her siblings.

"For me it was a phone call at work and everything was different,” Richard Fedor said.

“They did nothing wrong, the kids,” Juta Fedor said. “They were just playing outside and she just happened to be there."

After being rushed to Hasbro Hospital in Rhode Island, Kristen Fedor would spend a full month in intensive care and once home, she was in physical therapy several times a week.

On Thursday, Juta Fedor said prayers are being answered as specialists see Krista's progress.

But for this mother, it's what they don't know that scares her.

"We just don't know what's coming, Juta Fedor said.

“The doctors have an idea of what Kristen's progress is, what they expect, and no one really knows for sure and as a parent that's difficult for us to accept,” Richard Fedor said.

On Dec. 29, Kristen Fedor faces more surgery. They will be re-installing some bones in her skull that were taken out to relieve pressure on the brain following the accident.

"I wish I had that magic wand and change it back but I don't have it,” Juta Fedor said.

Richard Fedor said his daughter “was very artistic.”

“She liked to watercolor. She did very well holding pencil and paintbrush,” Richard Fedor said.

Now as the Fedor family faces the next phase of recovery, they hold out hope.

“She can actually lift up her head,” Juta Fedor said.

As we approach Christmas the Fedor family said they need nothing except maybe your prayers. But the community wants to hear nothing else but to help the family, so the firehouse in Voluntown has a major fundraiser dinner scheduled on Jan. 17.
