I am raising money to pay off some very important bills for my family. Our current financial issues are causing so much stress that it has affected my mom’s, sisters and my health.
We have a term in our family; Chinchuck Luck. In its simplest definition it means that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. We have never been a family that had things easy. We were a one income family and 5 people to a two bedroom. I wanted to break the cycle.
I started college. My mom was sick so I took time off to help her. I went back after a year only to have the school incorrectly process my financial aid three times. This resulted in falling way behind schedule.
Finally I was able to go back. Mid semester my dad was diagnosed with Cancer. I decided to take time off to help him. After a year, after he had been declared cancer free, I went back. I only had two classes left before I could start my BA. Mid semester my dad was diagnosed with cancer again. Only this time there would be no happy ending. He would lose his battle in May of 2012. He was the light of our lives! The most generous, funny, warmest man I have ever known. He was also the family’s only income. The day before my father was released into hospice we were told 1) that my mom had bladder cancer and 2) that we would need to move from a two bedroom two bath apartment we had for 15 years to a one bedroom one bath because it would be the only way to keep dad at home with us and it was all we could afford.
Meanwhile, I had just moved out with roommates and for the first time ever I had a bed at was mine and mine alone. I thought that I was finally breaking the cycle. I was wrong. When my dad died the walls around me and my family came crashing down. Right after his death my older sister was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease, a terminal and incurable disease. (http://www.hdsa.org/). Both my mother and sister were declared disabled.
I’m not sure how many of you have had to deal with the Social Services Department but take it from me it is no easy task. For one year their household had no income as we struggled and went in circles with SS. My mom battling cancer, my sister HD and I had lost my job. Bills were paid by monthly trips to shops to sell all our family jewelry and lots of personal items that were extremely sentimental.
Now they receive SS assistance but it hardly covers the rent let alone other expenses like DWP. We are looking into moving but that requires first and last along with deposit. The pressure of their financial security has fallen on my shoulders. Our only means for transportation is a bucket car that’s falling apart and was recently impounded. That car is the only means my family has to get to doctor’s appointments, my job, and our other needs.
My family’s lights are about to get shut off, the amount owed for my car increases daily and it is in desperate needs for repairs. I’d like to finish my two classes so I can start my BA to become a teacher. My family is going to need me to move in with them but it’s too expensive for now. All I can do for now is keep a roof with lights over their heads, food in their tummy, and give them a safe way to get around. I wouldn’t ask if it weren’t important.
