a Healthy Brain for Millions - Fight Dementia

Dementia - the forgotten pandemic

Introduction

What would a dementia service look like if it was based on real data, shared by all parties involved? What if crises could be avoided by early warning triggers? What if the person with dementia and their family have the ability to manage their situation with personalised insights. myAVOS has been created to meet these needs using a smart phone digital therapeutic application.

Dementia prevalence continues to rise. More specialists to match this need is an expensive option. Using technology to do the work and collect individual data is the smart option. It will improve communication, give personalised solutions, allow thresholds to be set for actions and help individuals manage their condition. myAVOS is thus not a replacement for any service, it is the bridge between the stepping stones which allows all the involved parties to do their job as well as they can.

The Need

While there is no cure or disease-modifying treatment for dementia, there is increasing evidence that changing certain lifestyle and cardiovascular factors can have a positive effect on outcomes.

Current services rely heavily on secondary care, whereas some of these interventions are often offered in primary care in a fragmented fashion.

This is compounded by increasing case numbers and a rather passive acceptance that nothing can be done, especially by the person with dementia who is often measured by their increasing disability, rather than their current ability.

Our Ambition
Personalise and democratise early dementia care. Improve knowledge and outcomes in people with dementia and their families by providing an integrated service that currently does not exist.

In the long term, we believe this will alter the current path of dementia and delay the need for full-time care.

Our Aim
Assess modifiable risk factors in the early stages of dementia and offer an integrated plan using cognitive behavioural techniques to improve various lifestyle factors, including diet and exercise; offer interventions, including cognitive training and improved adherence to important medications; and measure the results using existing smart phone technology and proprietary algorithms.

In turn, our hope is that this allows people to “fight back”, as is now the approach with cancer.

Pillars of Healthier Brain Aging

Lifestyle has a significant impact on your brain health.

1. What you eat and drink

When we get older, our brains are exposed to more harmful stress due to lifestyle and environmental factors, which may result in a process called oxidation, which damages brain cells.

Food rich in antioxidants may help protecting us from the harmful effects of oxidation in your brain.

2. How much you exercise

People who have frequent physical activity have a lower risk of developing dementia. Exercise improves blood flow and memory; it stimulates chemical changes in the brain that enhance learning, mood and thinking.

Stay fit. Stay smart.

3. How well you sleep

Sleep energises you, it improves mood and enhances your  immune system
Sleep may reduce build-up in the brain of an abnormal protein called beta-amyloid plaque, which is associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

4. Your general health

Diseases like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, higher cholesterol, and smoking all increase the risk of dementia.
You can control and reduce these risks. Get regular check-up, follow your doctor’s recommendations, and take medication as prescribed.

Live a healthy lifestyle for mind and body.

5. Coping with Stress

Managing stress may help to slow down age-related decline in brain health.

What we develop: myAVOS

The first digital ecosystem from OptiChroniX is myAVOS

The ecosystem is designed to promote healthier cognitive ageing through the Pillars of Healthier Living

The myAVOS ecosystem consists of two applications:

an application for a person developing cognitive impairment and sees a doctor with their complaints.
an application designed for anyone supporting that person (caregivers). This application shares important information about Loved Ones to the Carer and introduces preventative Lifestyle Medicine constructs to promote healthier brain-aging.

The apps have a comprehensive feature set for both:

myAVOS has a validated Dementia Risk Score to predict late-life dementia risk based on the presence of midlife risk factors

myAVOS has a validated Digital Cognitive Biomarker to measure and monitor Cognitive Change measurement. Users describe a picture in their own sentences, which is then followed by analysis of speech to identify change over time.

myAVOS has a diet recording function that leads to advice on beneficial modifications to eating habits.

myAVOS records activity and encourages conversation on any improvements that need to be made.

myAVOS monitors sleep and has suggestions to improve its length and quality.

myAVOS provides active medication information and reminders

myAVOS introduces coping techniques when it measures Mood, Anxiety or Stress.

myAVOS has the ability to link to family and friends within the app, but also promote social activity on the smart phone.

myAVOS aims to improve control of chronic disorders in general through proven non-specific methods Cognitive stimulation.

Improving support and wellbeing for patients and caregivers,  preserving memories, and promoting longer independent living.
