On Sunday, January 12th, Josue Cruz tragically lost an unbelievable and courageous battle with a flesh eating bacteria.

Last Friday, what were thought to be symptoms of a cold progressively worsened, followed by a sudden hospital admission the next day. Then came the news only typically heard in movies or involving rare cases with open wounds and warm shallow water- flesh eating bacteria.

To everyone impacted, the disbelief was staggering. How could this have happened? January in Connecticut certainly isn’t conducive for a swim in lakes or rivers. He hadn't reported any cuts or open wounds. How could this be?!

While still in shock, his sudden symptoms took a turn for the worse and he was airlifted to a specialized hospital unit. That unit reconfirmed the last diagnosis and it was clear- our beloved Josue had to fight the biggest battle of his life.

Fight he did- the incredible medical team resuscitated him three times while he fought with all of his might. Surgeons and family standing by his side relayed the level of vigor he put into that fight. He fought until his last breath surrounded by his beloved parents, brother and aunt.

Josue was not only my cousin, but an incredible son, brother, friend and positive mentor to so many.  He worked tirelessly to help support his family and was the glue that held everyone together

In the face of adversity and challenges, he never complained. Instead, he overcame adversity time and time again.

In a recent Instagram post, the essence of his attitude toward life is perfectly captured:  "challenges are what makes life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful”. That, I can tell you is what he managed to accomplish each and every time.

On behalf of his father, mother, five incredible siblings, entire family and extensive unit of friends, this loss is so impactful.

I humbly ask for the community's support to celebrate and honor Josue and to help bring awareness to victims of these rare infections. All funds raised will go directly to his parents and siblings in support of funeral arrangements and family expenses in the months ahead.

We're asking you to join us by linking arms and hearts with the Cruz family.  There is no donation too big or small, even $5 helps reach this attainable goal.

Josue, you have always cared for others above yourself. Your infectious energy and genuine soul has impacted so many. I promise you that in your short 30 years you have positively affected the lives of more than you could ever imagine. Your infectious energy and beautiful soul will be missed but never forgotten.
