Protection of LIFE

There is a proposed Lithium mine  by Lithium Nevada/Lithium Americas near Thacker Pass, NV or better known as Peehee Mu'huh (Rotten Moon) by the Paiute and Shoshone people. The mine is 40 miles from the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribes (FMPST) reservation. In full operation, the mine plans to use 1.7 billion gallons per year or 4.64 million gallons per day  in one of the driest regions in the nation also in a time with an increasing water drought. Since time immemorial, the Fort McDermitt Tribe and surrounding tribes practice a reciprocal relationship with the land, however, the mine will significantly disrupt our way of life and inherent right to practice our traditions.

Despite Lithium Nevada’s characterization of the mine as ‘green,’ the company estimates that it will produce 152,703 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year. The water, air, land, wildlife, plants, and everything in between will all pay the ultimate price for lithium powered batteries for electric vehicles and so called ‘clean energy.’  Lithium Nevada wants to turn Thacker Pass into a toxic wasteland by contamination of water, air, irreparable damage to the land and culturally important animals, medicines, and first foods ultimately guilty of Cultural Genocide to the Paiute and Shoshone people.

Atsa koodakuh wyh Nuwu (People of Red Mountain) are a group of Fort McDermitt tribal descendants that deeply oppose the Lithium mines threatening our homelands. Atsa Koodakuh wyh Nuwu continue to practice traditions, language, hunting and gathering of first foods, medicines, and materials and enjoy teaching the generations now in hopes of them teaching the future Nuwu (People). For many Native people, our ceremonies, teachings, culture, and life path is connected to the land, so by protecting the land, we protect the People. Peehee Mu'huh has sacred burial sites, which we must keep intact of utmost respect. We prohibit the desecration of our sacred burial sites.

Atsa Koodakuh wyh Nuwu are deeply concerned that the mine threatens the community with man camps and large labor forces which are correlated to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Girls and Two Spirit (MMIWG2S), is an ongoing problem that brings trauma to our Native communities. Stated in the FEIS, Lithium Nevada will have 1,250 workers at the mine. Atsa Koodakuh wyh Nuwu and our allies will no longer witness the contamination and rape of our lands and to our people.

Please help us protect Peehee Mu’huh by pressuring the Secretary Department of Interior, Debra Haaland to rescind the Thacker Pass Lithium Mine permits with a Mineral Withdrawal.

We continue our awareness for protection of Peehee Mu’huh with protection camps, ceremonies, events, rallies, online trainings, social media, etc. We hope that our protection camp grows.  Join us at camp and stand with us in solidarity. All donations will cover expenses such as events, camp needs, food, gas, supplies, legal aid, traveling costs, other necessities, etc. Thank you for taking the time to Protect Peehee Mu'huh. Aho!
