Twin Hills School 8th Grade Trip

Donation protected
For students in rural Alaska, it is hard to imagine what a place like Chicago looks like in real life. I want to expose my students to an environment they have never seen and show them what opportunities are out there for them beyond just the rural village they've grown up in.

My students come from a Yup'ik Eskimo village of only 80 residents off the road system in rural Alaska. The village is only accessible by air or water. All supplies come by through the post office because there are no stores in the village. Because it is such a small village, there are only two classrooms in the school. The classrooms are multi-age, so the students and teachers are able to stay together for multiple years.

This is a beautiful and unique place to live, but providing a typical elementary and middle school experience for the students is a challenge due to location and cost prohibitive travel. My students are used to daily travel on a 4-wheeler, snowmobile, or Piper Supercub airplane rather than a car, scheduling activities around high and low tide, and dressing to protect themselves from frostbite.

Being in rural Alaska, the cost of traveling makes field trips nearly impossible. Each year, we hold fundraisers to earn as much as we can to fund a class trip for the 8th grade students. In such a small community, fundraising options are limited, and we need help to meet our fundraising goal.

This year the students have chosen to travel to Chicago, Illinois. While on this trip, we will pack in as many educational and fun activities as we can in the time we have. This trip is some students' only chance to travel outside the state of Alaska, and the experience of seeing a big city could be life-changing.

By donating to this project, you are helping students from rural Alaska see and experience what the world is like outside their village. For most, this is the only chance they have to travel outside the state of Alaska and see a big city like Chicago. We hope to expose the students to as many educational and fun activities as we can squeeze into a week!
