Kenya Africa Global Healthcare Project
Hello Everyone My name is Ashley Stahl! I am a second year nursing student at Chamberlain College of Nursing. I have always wanted to help out others and I am finally making my dreams come true by becoming a nurse. I have been on the Dean's list at school all 4 semesters I have been in college and it makes me very proud. I do not simply want to be a nurse; I want to be a great one! Helping people in my community makes me happy, but now I have been blessed with the opportunity go to Kenya Africa for an International Service Project at the end of August this year.
Fifteen nursing students from my school, Chamberlain College of Nursing, were selected to go and I am very proud to say I was one. We go to different "slums" in Kenya. The "slums" are the areas that suffer the most from poverty; many of these families live on an income of $1 a DAY! There is no electricity, no running water, no sewer systems, and often no food. My school, along with nursing and medical students from other schools are going there to set up medical clinics. Many of these people have never had medical treatment in their lives.
Our goal is to treat as many people as we possibly
can for the two weeks we are there. We treat them for things such as; diseases,
infections, malnutrition, wounds, burns, and dehydration. You name it and we
will try our best to treat it. Another main goal of ours is to teach the people
of Kenya about health care and ways that they can improve their own health.
This is an experience that is known to change the lives
of students. It is deeply rewarding and words cannot explain how excited I am
to be a part of something life this.
The only downfall is that this trip is going to cost me$3,000 out of my own
pocket. This is where I need your help. Being a full time nursing student I am
only able to work two days a week, which is not going to cut it :( I know times
have been hard but I am going to collect donations and do some fundraising for
this trip. Any amount of money will put me one dollar closer to helping all of
these people. Even $10-20 helps more than you think. Every dollar will be
greatly appreciated not only by me, but by the people I will be helping as well
We
can't change the world, but we can change lives in it!
Thank You So Much!
