Izzie is an 8 year old Birman who was diagnosed with a squamous cell carcinoma in his lower jaw. Back in March of 2017, he was taken in for what seemed to be a routine dental procedure - a tooth had fallen out, the first vet who saw him stated it was common amongst his breed and that a dental operation would be necessary to remove any remaining tooth that may be lying in his jaw.
After they did the x-ray, it was discovered that he had a small tumor growing in his jaw. They performed a biopsy and informed us that we would be made aware of what it was exactly upon the test results.
The results came back and it was indeed a squamous cell carcinoma. The next course of action was to see an oncologist to see what options we could explore for treatment. Unfortunately, the options were very limited - operation was out as a cat's jaw is too small and the only remaining options were chemo and radiation, neither of which seemed to provide much other than a minuscule amount of additional time.
At this point the best suggestion was to keep him comfortable and happy for as long as possible. Through pain killers, other forms of medication and much love, he has been hanging on longer than anticipated, which we are all very thankful for.
To this day, he is still cuddling, purring, eating (he LOVES to eat still), drinking water and being social. His spirits are still high and anyone who has been around him agrees that he doesn't really seem to know much is wrong with him. Sadly, his physical appearance suggests otherwise - the tumor has grown significantly, he is starting to lose fur on his chest, and so on. It's hard to watch, but until his attitude changes, we are doing the best to keep him happy and comfortable.
Your donations are being applied towards his medial expenses (surgery, oncologist, biopsy, medications, food, etc). We are not one to typically ask for help, but in regards to this both emotional and financial love and support go a very long way.
