Kenya, Africa Nursing Student Service Project
Hello everyone! My name is Cierra Sellers and I am 19 years old. I am a second year nursing student at Chamberlain College of Nursing, St. Louis, MO. I am very excited that I am almost done with my nursing program because it means I am just that much closer to starting my nursing career which I have dreamed about for forever!! I have always wanted to be a part of helping touch others' lives by being a nurse.
I have been graciously blessed with an amazing opportunity to go to Kenya Africa for an International Service Project at the end of August. Fifteen nursing students from my school, Chamberlain College of Nursing, were selected to go and I am very excited to say I was one. We will be going to Nairobi Kenya where we will go to different slums. The slums are the areas that suffer the most from poverty; many of these families live on an income of $1 a DAY! There is no electricity, no running water, no sewer systems, and usually no food. Students from my school, along with other nursing and medical students from other schools are going there to set up medical clinics. Many of these people have never had medical treatment in their lives. Our goal is to treat as many people as we possibly can for the two weeks we are there. We treat them for diseases, infections, malnutrition, wounds, burns, & dehydration. You name it and we will try our best to treat it. We are also going there to provide health education to people that have very little education at all. It is a deeply rewarding experience and words cannot explain how excited I am to be a part of this service.
The only downfall is that this trip is going to cost $3,000.00. Being a full time nursing student, I am limited to only working one day a week.
