El Cerrito High School Speech and Debate has a 50 year history of excellence competing at the state and national level. Speech and Debate offers students opportunites to develop critical thinking, listening, and argumentative skills. It also helps individuals become better students. However, in order to compete at a higher level, some students on the team have chosen to compete as "independent entries" which have to cover all of their own fees.
A Georgia State study on forensics showed that the average GPA of a debater is 20% higher than a non-debating peer. Additonaly, average graduation rate is 40% higher than non- debating peers.
Our team has had massive success this year, including an undefeated record at the Bay Area's Golden Gate Speech Association league tournaments, and a bid to the Tournament of Champions in Kentucky.
It is becoming increasingly difficult for us to continue to compete in the event we love because debate is a very expensive activity, with tournament fees, hotel reservations, and airplane tickets all piling up.
