Seeing the world through my eyes

In order to “Change The Way We See The World” I should probably see the world first myself! That means more now than ever before, as I never thought my vision would decline from where it was for almost 25 years... However, your goals tend to change in life, as life throws you a curve ball. When I found out earlier this year that my vision is declining again, it was a giant shock. Since I was first diagnosed at 7 years of age with Macular Degeneration, I've always been told “I'm sure they will find a cure one day.” The weird thing is, I never banked on or even hoped for that. Life has been good to me, despite my daily struggles, and I realize that no matter how independent I want to be, I need to rely on others at times. Life is what you make of it, and I've never been about throwing myself a pity party, there is always someone who has it worse, and I was grateful for the vision I had left. Now that it is clear the vision I have isn't guaranteed either, I knew it was time, to go see what the world has to offer!

When the doctor informed me in September of 2014 about my vision decline, and no clear time table of how much vision I'd lose, or how quickly I would lose it, I knew time is not on my side, and to not take it for granted. He also informed me, that it would be in my best interest to start using a cane to get around. As weird as it sounds, to me that hit home the hardest, I was always able to blend in, let people see me for who I am, and not focus in on my disability. People tend to see another person's weaknesses and limitations. Limitations are what we place on ourselves, they aren't set by others. Needless to say, I was determined and focused to see the world and all it has to offer, while I still have vision left to appreciate it, and am able to get around by myself without assistance.

Seeing as I wasn't planning on losing any more of my vision, I also wasn't planning on going to see the world at this point in my life either. Through my experience in marketing/PR I figured I would raise money for my new found adventure. Along with doing fund raising events, and through the help of friends and family, I planned on using GoFundMe.com to help raise money for my journey. The more money I am able to raise the more I will be able to see throughout my adventure in 2015. My mission is not only to see the world but also share my journey with everyone! During my adventures I will be documenting what I see through my eyes by using a Go Pro. When the year is over, I will make it into a documentary. The documentary will be to inspire others not to wait around for Father Time to catch up to us, but go after our dreams and pursue them. This is our life to live, so we should probably all start living. Every day on this earth is a gift, but tomorrow is always a mystery, and who knows what tomorrow will bring us. Take advantage of today, because tomorrow may not afford us the same luxuries as yesterday. Also I will be continuing to blog during my journey, as well as sharing photos and videos along the way. Already in the works is a backpacking trip through Europe over the summer, yoga on the beaches of Costa Rica, and spending a few weeks driving up to Alaska. From surfing to sight-seeing, every day I will treat as a true gift, because when that point in time comes when I do lose the rest of my vision, I will be able to say to myself “I saw the world, and all it had to offer!” I might lose my vision, but I won't lose the memory of what I saw while I still have it! As long as I have my brain, drive, and passion for life, no one can place limitations on what I can do. Whether you are able to contribute financially to my journey, or just follow me on twitter, I appreciate all the love and support I can get. Life is what we make of it, and I plan on making the most of my life!
