Ivy needs surgery to run and play.

My one-year-old pitbull pup, Ivy, has a limp that has been growing progressively worse. While she was in foster care through a rescue agency, she was not taken to the vet to investigate her persistent limping. Immediately upon meeting her, I knew something was wrong (I was told "that's just how she walks" and "maybe it's from an old injury"). I was worried about adopting her given the potential of a serious medical issue that had not been looked into, but her sweet face, playfulness, and puppy kisses melted my heart.
I tried to get insurance, but pre-existing conditions are not covered, so I took her to the vet shortly after adopting her. She was prescribed anti-inflammatory medication and while that helped a bit, the limp continued to worsen, especially after exercise (which this energetic pup needs!). After X-rays and a CT Scan, a fragmented medial coronoid process (elbow dysplasia) was discovered. This is a developmental growth that occurs in some dogs. Medical bills are already racking up from the diagnostics and she still has the surgery and rehabilitation ahead of her.
Recovery is 6-8 weeks and then 4-6 months of rehabilitation. This girl has so much energy and will need to be given medication that sedates her while recovering to allow for proper healing. The good news is that with this procedure (arthroplasty), she should be able to run, jump, and play like a young dog desires! She will likely need to stay on anti-inflammatory medication afterward (as needed) and her elbow will become arthritic as she ages. Some arthritis is already evident, which might not have been the case had she been given the care she needed months ago (this makes me so sad). I'm eager to get her the care she deserves! She is scheduled for surgery on Thursday, April 19th at BEVS in Williston, VT. I was fortunate to be able to schedule it for the week of my vacation, so I can be home to care for her as she begins her recovery.
Despite this medical journey, I have no regrets about adopting her. Ivy is a constant source of positivity and if she didn't find her forever home with me, she may not have been taken to get the  diagnostics and care she needed. Any contributions will be greatly appreciated and applied directly to her medical care. This pup is full of love and will be happy to give lots of affection as a thank you!

*Any contributions that exceed our goal (need) will be donated to a local animal shelter to help other animals in need.
