Adwal to America

Donation protected

Dear Friends:

Fatima and Hind Akchmar of Taeawniya Adwal, Ribat El Kheir (REK), Morocco, are America-bound! They\'ve been accepted to exhibit Adwal\'s weaving at the juried Santa Fe International Folk Art Market in July 2012 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Immediately following the Market they will travel to Los Angeles to participate in the Handweaver\'s Guild of America (HGA) biennial Convergence Conference being held in Long Beach. They will attend workshops on natural dye techniques to share with the rest of the Adwal members. They will learn from American weavers and Western buyers for product development and and make valuable U.S. market connections.

They\'ve been invited to speak with the Textile Museum Associates of Southern California. Several gatherings will be hosted in private homes for them to share their story and products. They will then drive up the coast to San Francisco and return to Morocco from there.

As most of you know, I worked with Adwal during my Peace Corps service in Ribat El Kheir from 2008-10. I am now working closely with the Peace Corps Volunteer that replaced me to coordinate (and fund) this trip on behalf of Fatima and Hind.

Fatima and Hind\'s travel, lodging and meal expenses to and from Santa Fe are covered by the scholarship Adwal received from the Folk Art Market. In addition, they\'ve received a Mearle K. Gable II Grant to pay for their Convergence Conference entrance and workshop fees. I will host them during the California portion of their trip.

The Goal amount we seek to raise is to pay Santa Fe expenses not included in the scholarship and the added cost of coming to California. Specifically this will cover:
Visa fees
Shipping of product to Santa Fe (largest amount due to weight of carpets)
Santa Fe booth fee
Brochures
Travel to California

In addition to the scholarship and grant secured, we\'ve already raised $465 and hope we can count on you to help us reach our Goal. I will provide a full accounting and pictures to all contributors after their trip.

Any/all donations are appreciated as we help Fatima and Hind, and through them the women of Adwal, realize a trip of a lifetime!
