Ivan's emergency surgery in Cancun

My girlfriend Libny and I were so excited to plan our first dream vacation together on the beach and decided to go to Cancun, Mexico. We saved money for an entire year and paid in advance to stay in a beautiful resort. We arrived in Cancun on June 21st, 2017, ready to enjoy a fun, relaxing time.

For the first 28 hours we enjoyed each other, had fun on the beach, and after a romantic dinner went to sleep. Soon after I started having trouble breathing and when I went to the bathroom I saw in the mirror that my nose was bleeding. It wouldn’t stop, and soon there was so much blood in my mouth it was choking me and I had to throw up. I saw the doctor from the resort but he was unable to control the bleeding, so they called an ambulance and took us to a hospital 40 minutes from the resort in Cancun.

When the bleeding still wouldn’t stop in the emergency room, I started to have a panic attack and my blood pressure went up. I was also very worried because I didn’t have any travel or health insurance. The emergency doctor in charge said I would have to stay there until the ear, nose and throat specialist arrived in the morning. Since I was unable, my girlfriend Libny took charge of the hospital admission for me. She paid $3000 when I checked in, plus $590 for the ambulance.

When the ear, nose and throat specialist arrived, he tried to stop the bleeding with nasal packing. Unfortunately, that didn’t work, and after more time the bleeding just became more intense, so the doctor had to come back to try it again. After another hour I started bleeding again uncontrollably. This went on for almost 8 hours, until finally the doctor said my only option was to have a surgery right away.

The hospital told Libny she would have to pay $7000 in advance for the surgery, as well as the $3000 she had already paid. Since we were on vacation we didn’t have that kind of money with us, so Libny used her credit cards. After the surgery we thought that the expenses were over, but then we were told that the charge for each day I was in the hospital was around $2500. My hospital stay turned out to be 7 days because I was unable to breathe normally due to the packing in my throat and nose, and then I needed a second surgery to remove all that. I finally left the hospital breathing normally, but by the time it was all over, Libny and I had accumulated $22,500 in credit card debt.

It was a very traumatic experience for me, but also for my girlfriend Libny, who supported me in every way possible so that I could just focus on getting well. She did everything from sleeping on a couch in my room every night, to paying all the bills with her various credit cards. Now the crisis is over, I am hoping that with some help from people I can thank her by raising enough money to be able to pay back her credit cards, about $20,000.

I truly appreciate anything you can do to help us, and encourage everyone travelling abroad to get travel insurance so you never have to experience what we went through. Thanks again for your feeling for us.
