Italian children's library in Eindhoven

Donation protected
Eindhoven Italian School "La Lampadina"  is a new initiative in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, to support children who speak Italian at home with one or both of their parents. Italian-speaking children who grow up in the Netherlands do not have easy access to Italian language lessons or Italian books without the support of supplemental schools such as La Lampadina. The Italian embassy helps by subsidizing Italian classes, but to our knowledge it does not finance Italian libraries in the Netherlands.

La Lampadina is pleased to announce that it is partnering with the local library in Eindhoven to open an international children's collection, to include 500 Italian books for children aged 0 to 12. This is a wonderful opportunity to make use of the city library's infrastructure and lending system. Children who live in Eindhoven are given a free library pass from the local library.

In order for the collection to be a success, we must provide new and attractive books. (Expert librarians have informed us that our old books from the 80s donated from family in Italy are not going to be effective . . . ) So far, we have financed the purchase of 50 books ourselves. La Lampadina has reached out to publishers in Italy to ask for donations, but they can only offer a discount of 30%. The average children's book from these publishers costs 13 Euro, and we need 450 books to complete the collection. If we take estimated shipping costs into account, we will need about 4000 Euro to complete the project. (Should we reach our goal and any extra funds remain after the purchase and shipping of the 450 books, the remaining funds would be used towards printing worksheets and flyers for La Lampadina's Italian classes.)

The international collection is scheduled to start in October 2019, with a 6-month pilot. The Italian books will remain property of La Lampadina and can be housed elsewhere (for instance at a local elementary school where La Lampadina runs after school classes) if the local library for any reason does not continue with the international collection after the pilot.

La Lampadina's organizers are un-paid volunteers, and during the start-up period the teachers and assistants for the Italian classes are unpaid as well. We would be grateful if we can raise money through many small donations to this worthy project. We appreciate any and all support!
