As so many of you know, cancer is near and dear to my heart... as is community service and helping others. The journey with my dad and cancer made me a stronger and more caring person. I learned so many things through the journey, both good and bad. The one thing I learned is that the journey is NEVER easy.
Each year my MSTC Corrections students pick a "cause" to raise money for. This year, they selected Isaac Mlodik. I told them if they reach their goal, the first week in March, I would sport a bright yellow faux hawk and the week after I would shave my head for childhood cancer awareness. Many people asked if I will help my students fundraise, or if I will stand in the way of meeting their goal so I don't have to shave my head ... that's a silly question! I will help in any way I can because 11 year old Isaac Mlodik deserves the world right now to show him how much he is supported and loved!
Isaac is 11 years old. He is a 5th grader at St. Bronislava. He was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. He very recently began 12 weeks of chemotherapy, will have surgery and more chemotherapy.
Isaac's mom, Michelle, told him, "Isaac, you have never done anything that has required you to have hair and you never will." So, with that, I have never been required to have hair, and though I love my hair, and I will miss it, I can't wait for my students to reach their goal and have my head shaved.
If you are intersted in helping, you can do so in several ways. You can donate at this site and watch the donations go up up up, or you can buy a bracelet (I will tell you later where they will be available).
Please consider donating. The students have to reach their goal by the end of February to see me with a yellow fauw hawk/bald head.
Anyone else who may be intersted in shaving their heads, we will then have hats available with the MSTC logo in the front and "I Stand With Isaac" in the back.
Please help my students and I give this family a great gift. Anyone who had been through the journey of cancer, knows how fast all bills add up. The trips for treatment alone are pricey.
In closing, I watched my dad for years go through his battle, but it is nothing like seeing a child in pain, both physically and emotionally. So, in addition to any financial donation you will consider, please also consider an extra prayer or two each day. Isaac and his family need prayers and lots of them!
