Irma Relief for Cindy Lewis

Cindy Lewis could use a little help from her friends …

It’s time to step up. Our friends in the Florida Keys have suffered a devastating blow from Hurricane Irma and need our help. The insurance companies are continuing to debate whether the damage should be covered by flood insurance or normal home owner’s insurance.  The result is that claims are being withheld.  The bottom line is that residents of the Florida Keys need some help rebuilding.

Cindy Lewis is a marine biologist who lives and works on Long Key, just a few miles from ground zero for this category 4 storm.  Cindy evacuated safely to northern Florida.  When she was finally allowed to return home, she discovered the house was still standing, but the storm surge had filled it with several feet of salt water.

Structurally the house is sound, but the lower half of all the interior walls had to be demolished and removed.  All the electrical outlets were submerged requiring new electrical wiring throughout the house.  Her appliances were destroyed by the salt water, along with all cabinets and furniture that rested on the floor.

While waiting for permits to start rebuilding.  Cindy and other local residents are doing what they can to prepare their homes for repair.  They must first remove soaked drywall and insulation, so that the interior of walls can be allowed to dry. After that the exposed lumber must be treated with antimicrobial/antifungal solution to prevent mold and infestation.  This treatment does not come cheap.

Please help Cindy recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

She is a dedicated scientist, who lives in the Keys in order to teach students about the delicate ecosystem of the Florida coral reefs. Your monetary support is greatly appreciated and will make a huge difference in her recovery.
