Irish Athlete at Freediving World Championships

How long can you hold your breath?

I can hold my breath for 6 mins. That’s the length of Bohemian Rhapsody!

I’m a freediver; someone who holds their breath underwater. I’ve been to 60m depth. Liberty Hall, Dublin is 60m high. So from the top of Liberty Hall to the ground and back up...all on one breath!

Freediving has changed my life.  Learning to hold your breath and take it underwater requires a level of mental strength, awareness and focus like no discipline I’ve experienced. Breathwork, relaxation techniques and mindful meditation are key elements of this sport. Whether I’m in water or on land, freediving helps me live better.

In 2017 I participated in my first freediving competition. I broke two national records. I want to do it again, but this time at the World Championships.

Having worked as part of the safety team at the last World Championships, I set myself the goal to come back in 2019 as an athlete and under the Irish flag.

The cost of full-time training, flights, accommodation, equipment and competition fees somewhat challenge the ‘free’ in the sport’s name! Self- funded, I’m support to help me cover the costs and become the first Irish person at the World Championships.
