Irene Mena Honorary Grandmother of the Brown Beret

Irene A Perrariz Mena was a San Diego native, of Mexican-Philipino decent. She was a resident of Logan Heights, currently known as Barrio Logan.  Born June 3, 1929, she completed 91 years, prior to her death on June 24, 2020.  During her lifetime Irene began her activism in the late 1960's becoming very involved with the needs of the community and one of the leaders to march on the land that became Chicano Park.  She was part of the Chicano Park Steering Committee and was Honored as the Grandmother of the Brown Berets organization in San Diego. Irene had 10 children including a stepson, 33 grandchildren, 68 great grand children and 19 great great grand children.  She was VERY loved by her family and community. 
A celebration of Irene's life is planned for July 11. 2020 beginning at
                6:00 pm with a flag raising.              ceremony.
                6:30 p.m. we will have speakers by organizations and community members commemorating Irene followed by an overnight vigil at the park.

                6:30 am Tree planting in honor of Irene at Chicano Park followed by reception for family at the Centro in Balboa Park. Masks required. Social distancing encouraged as we don't want to be shut down.  And please, if you are not feeling well or think you may have any covid-19 symptoms.  Do NOT attend. The family will definitely understand. 


Irene's services and memorial will cost $10,000.00.  We are requesting donations to be used for her services.  If we raise more money, it will go towards other expenses and a memorial that the family would like to dedicate in Honor of Irene in Chicano Park.


This is the only GoFundMe account endorsed by Irene's family for her funeral costs.  All donations will be going directly to Irene's daughter Rebecca Gomez~Gonzalez.
