Donnie Winters Country CD Project

Donation protected
Donnie Winters is a third generation entertainer. His father, Don Winters, sang with Marty Robbins for over 20 years as part of the Marty Robbins Trio and as a 30 minute solo act in Marty’s shows.

When Donnie was 15 he wrote his first song that was recorded by Marty, titled ‘Do Me A Favor.’ As Donnie says, “It didn’t buy me my first car. Family friend Mel Tillis did that. But it bought me my second car.”

When Marty was recovering from his first heart attack, Donnie played guitar on the Grand Ole Opry for Marty until he brought his regular band back and started touring again. He also played guitar for Ronny Robbins the year following Marty’s death when Ronny went on tour keeping his father’s music alive.

As Southern Rock became popular, Donnie and his brother, Dennis, decided to start their own band, The Winters Brothers Band, with the encouragement of their dad and Marty who loved the upbeat sound and songs they were writing. Marty recorded many of their songs over the years. Some of those songs besides ‘Do Me A Favor’  include: ‘Shotgun Rider,’  ‘Misery In My Soul,’  ‘Another day Has Passed You By,’  ‘One Man's Trash,’ and  ’All I Wanna Do.’

During their time playing Southern Rock, they opened for bands such as Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker, The Allman Brothers and they also played The Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam each year. They have songs on the Volunteer Jam albums and their 1977 album The Winters Brothers Band, which was released on ATCO/Atlantic Records.

When The Winters Brothers Band broke up, Dennis kept playing Southern Rock and Rock, while Donnie went back to his Country roots. He currently plays in clubs around Nashville with various friends in the music business and he hosts and mixes sound for the weekly Writers Night at Douglas Corner Café, which is second only to the Bluebird Café’s Writers Night in popularity in the Nashville area.

Donnie is working on a country CD to be released in 2015, which will feature songs written only by him and  his family. On the CD are songs written by his Dad and Uncle Ray Edenton,  ‘You’re Running Wild,’ which was recorded by The Louvin Brothers; ‘Do Me A Favor,’ recorded by Marty Robbins; ‘Shake Hands With A Loser,’ also written by his Dad; ‘Rosita,’ a song written by Donnie in which he pays tribute to his Dad by yodeling the way he learned from him; and other great country songs written by Donnie over the years.

It is hope to put this out on CD and later vinyl, as a tribute to the time when vinyl was the only way to buy music.
