Timeka Pete is fighting for her life. She suffers from lupus, which has caused blood clotting problems. A blood clot in her lung led to the diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis, and doctors say a lung transplant is critical to her survival. While awaiting her transplant, she relies on an oxygen machine to assist her in breathing.
These health challenges are difficult for Timeka and her husband, Husam, and it breaks her heart that she can't be as active with her young sons as she'd like. Both sons are active in basketball. They've grown up with a mom who is often sick and in the hospital, and she dreams of the day when she can be more active and involved in their activities outside the house. Although her activities are limited these days, she loved dancing, playing sports and card games with her sons and working out when she was able. She looks forward to the transplant that will give her freedom from the oxygen tank so she can live an active, healthy life. But right now, she needs your help.
Unfortunately, Timeka's hope for new life comes at a very high price.
The average lung transplant costs approximately $550,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with the health coverage, which will cover the cost of the transplant itself, she faces significant expenses related to surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to her survival as the transplant.
When she receives her transplant, Timeka must temporarily relocate to be near the hospital during recovery, incurring substanstial expenses for travel, food and lodging.
