<div>Als daktari in spe krijg ik deze zomer een bijzonder inkijkje in het reilen en zeilen in het Turiani Hospital, gelegen in de binnenlanden van Tanzania. Mijn bewondering voor een ieder werkzaam in het ziekenhuis is groots. Dagelijks zie ik hoe er naar gestreefd wordt op de meest inventieve wijze de best mogelijke zorg te leveren.

<div>Helaas ervaar ik ook steeds weer hoe uitdagend het is om goede kwaliteit zorg te verlenen met een schrijnend tekort aan cruciale medische hulpmiddelen. Zo zijn er verspreid over alle afdelingen slechts een handjevol simpele stethoscopen, digitale thermometers en bloeddruk- en saturatiemeters beschikbaar. Op de Intensive Care en Spoedeisende Hulp samen is zelfs slechts één werkende digitale thermometer voorhanden en de enige echt goed werkende stethoscoop is mijn eigen. Naast een tekort aan deze basale, maar zeer belangrijke diagnostische middelen zijn er ook bepaalde medicijnen die niet tot nauwelijks verkrijgbaar zijn in Tanzania. Denk hierbij aan vitamine K druppels voor pasgeborenen en nitroglycerinespray voor patiënten met acute hartproblemen.

<div>In overleg met het ziekenhuisbestuur zou ik graag geld inzamelen om een aantal essentiële medische hulpmiddelen te kunnen aanschaffen. Dit betreft dus, afhankelijk van het opgehaalde bedrag, enkele goede kwaliteit stethoscopen, oorthermometers, bloeddrukmeters, saturatiemeters (inclusief meters die geschikt zijn voor kleine kinderen) en de eerdere genoemde, moeilijk verkrijgbare medicijnen (deze zullen worden meegenomen vanuit Nederland door twee volgende coassistenten). Graag nodig ik jullie uit ook een bijdrage te leveren. Elke donatie, groot of klein, is van toegevoegde waarde. Het volledig opgehaalde bedrag zal worden overgedragen aan het ziekenhuis. Met jullie hulp hoop ik het ziekenhuispersoneel te ondersteunen, zodat zij de zorg kunnen bieden die zij hun patiënten graag zouden willen geven.
