Inwood is a New York City neighborhood the way it should be. In this diverse, but majority working-class, immigrant, and Dominican community, people know each other and stop to talk to one another. They gather to play ball or dominoes. Residents know the owners and workers in their local businesses. The neighborhood is busy and urban, but its human scale encourages community. And Inwood provides affordable housing for thousands.
Now the people of Inwood may lose all of this. Your donation can help save this neighborhood.

In August 2018, a massive rezoning was passed by the City Council over the strong objections of Inwood’s residents and small business owners, who fought the rezoning at their community board, at public hearings, in the press, and in the streets.
The rezoning will bring hi-rise luxury development and gentrification. Thousands of residents are threatened with the loss of their homes. Small businesses will be replaced with large chain stores. The entire character of the neighborhood will change.
Our fight against this destructive rezoning and the landscape of towers it will bring could affect zoning citywide and even nationwide. Our victory will be every tenant’s victory.

We want to thank everyone who has contributed to the Inwood Legal Action fundraising campaign and supported our efforts thus far to challenge and stop the rezoning process here in Inwood.
We believe City Hall imposed the rezoning on our neighborhood by deliberately ignoring the serious impacts the rezoning will have. We are currently in the process of suing the City in state court for its disregard of these impacts. We commenced this first legal challenge to the rezoning (known as an Article 78 petition) on December 10 in Supreme Court, New York County, and we are represented by well known civil rights and environmental attorney, Michael Sussman, in this suit.

Although we are now in Court, our fight is just beginning. We are in it for the long haul, because we believe this rezoning will lead to reduced housing opportunities and permanent displacement of Latinx and Black people in our community. We are preparing a second lawsuit against the City in federal court to protect our civil rights and ensure equal housing opportunities. Distinguished civil rights attorney, Norman Siegel, is representing us in our federal case. We need to raise $250,000 for legal fees, expert testimony, and organizing to build a successful lawsuit and bring our cause to federal court to save our vibrant neighborhood.

En agosto de 2018, el Concejo Municipal aprobó una rezonificación masiva en contra a las fuertes objeciones de los residentes y propietarios de pequeñas empresas de Inwood, quienes lucharon contra la rezonificación en su junta comunitaria, en audiencias públicas, en la prensa y en las calles.
La rezonificación traerá desarrollo de lujo de gran altura y gentrificación. Miles de residentes están amenazados con la pérdida de sus hogares. Las pequeñas empresas serán reemplazadas por grandes cadenas de tiendas. Todo el carácter del barrio cambiará.
Nuestra lucha contra esta rezonificación destructiva y el paisaje de torres que traerá podría afectar la zonificación en toda la ciudad e incluso en todo el país. Nuestra victoria será la victoria de cada inquilino.
