About this project
Invisible City is a new piece of highly physical, evocative theatre, which tells the bold and unnerving tale of a naive newcomer to the big city and her struggles to adjust. At the heart of this struggle is the performer’s relationship to the audience and the intimacy and expectation between performer and public.
Written and performed by Lowri Jenkins and directed by Jennifer Fletcher, Invisible City is a cross-disciplinary creation which combines artists from dance, music, design and theatre. Surreal and tender, Invisible City is an ode to longing, hope and one woman’s desire to escape the desolate truth: that at the end of the day we only have ourselves.
After a long development period which has taken in performances and residencies in Barcelona, Bilbao, London, Cardiff and Venice, we are ready to launch Invisible City at its full capacity: we are going to Edinburgh Fringe Festival! We’ve been invited to perform at Venue 13 by the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where we have a brilliant 8.15pm slot all August long. This is our chance to introduce the show to a wide public, as well as theatre industry professionals, where we want to make connections that will help us secure a future tour, for the show and for our collaborative team.

What your money will support
Donating to our campaign will support us in 3 key areas:
1. Press and marketing: standing out in Edinburgh is a big task, with thousands of shows there every year. This money will allow us to collaborate with Holly Whytock, professional marketing officer with years of great experience promoting quality contemporary theatre. Her work will be to promote Invisible City in national and local publications, blogs and listings sites so that people are talking about our show before the Fringe even begins!
2. Printing and posters: we want Invisible City to carry a recognizable brand and your donations will allow us to create and distribute eye-catching, unique posters and flyers which will make our show’s signature impossible to forget!
3. Lemons: lemons play a key role in this piece…now, we don’t want to give away just why, but they are an important prop and we’ll be going through hundreds in Edinburgh. Our plan is to recycle the lemons we use by turning them into lovely lemon curd (which we will send to you guys as a thank you!). But this money will allow us to buy the 250kg of lemons we will need throughout August.
Who we are
Jennifer and Lowri first met at a networking event in London. Bonding over how awful they were at............ networking, a collaboration was born. That was more than two years ago, and in the intervening time the pair have developed a creative partnership that will continue well into the future.
One of the most exciting things about the partnership is the dialogue between creative disciplines: Jen comes from the world of dance and Lowri from the world of theatre, but through a shared fascination with small, human stories and a passion to create epic, moving performance from mundane or nonsensical moments, a common stage language has been created. Invisible City is the first evidence of that. And not the last.
To make the show Jennifer and Lowri have collaborated with musician Mat Martin whose compositional talents have led to the creation of the unique sound score, and most recently designer Buddug James Jones, another Welsh artist who has developed the show’s visual signature and set.
BIOS:
Lowri Jenkins is a writer and performer from South Wales (UK). After completing an MA in Text and Performance at RADA (London) she went on to train in New York, Madrid and Paris with SITI Company where she began a continuing interest in Suzuki and Viewpoints. Lowri now trains and leads workshops across Europe, most recently in Lisbon (CEM) and Paris
(Micadanses/SOIF Compagnie). In 2012 she began to develop Invisible City (then known as To London Love Me).
Other performance credits include;Barcelona Butoh Festival (Orizzonte, Mercat de les Flors/MNAC). As a writer Lowri has created two shows with award-winning Spanish/English company Teatro Entre Escombos and worked as assistant director with National Theatre Wales (Coriolan/Us) and Young Jean Lee’s Theater Company (Pullman, WA).
Director/Choreographer Jennifer Fletcher trained at LABAN (London) and co-founded dance theatre company The Mostly Everything People with composer/jazz musician Christopher Preece during their last year of training. The company have performed internationally and are currently being supported by Arts Council England and Canada Water Culture Space in the creation of a new dance theatre work. As a freelance Choreographer/Movement Director Jennifer has worked with companies including Liveartshow, Aya Theatre, OperaUpClose, House of Blakewell, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, Bath International Music Festival and performs regularly in musical comedy production “The Church” by Legs Akimbo.
Where we’ve been
The idea was born at NTW Waleslab residency Pollinate in 2012 and first scratched at Rich Mix (London) in early 2013 and has continued to grow as a collaboration between Lowri, Jennifer, and Mat. Over 2014, the work developed through performances and support from ACT Festival (Bilbao), SCHIUME (Venice), nunArt (Barcelona) and St.Donarts Arts Centre (Vale of Glamorgan). In 2015 Lowri received Arts Council Wales funding for a performance at Chapter Arts Centre (Cardiff) which went on to Cafe de las Artes Teatro (Santander). Here the team was joined by Designer Buddug J Jones to finalise and present the product of over a year of experiments and exploration. Now, after more than two years in development, we want to launch the full version of Invisible City at the Edinburgh Fringe – the perfect world stage to share this universal story with an international audience.
