dear community,
i’m writing on behalf of my dear friend, karen marshall. she is a black woman - educator, organizer, phenomenal photographer , movement and culture builder, leader, visionary. she's a giver and builder of relationships, community, and organization. we first met in boston at a social justice meeting, both looking to meet and make new friends. over 10 years later, i can honestly say i've never met a better friend and more extraordinary thinker, doer, and dreamer.
karen has been the ED of this organization, Rethink , for the last 8 years and works with several liberatory education organizations and organizers, as well as, black liberation organizers. she is thinking ahead for the next two years and i want to help set her up. she’s never had access to retirement or much less savings. she has been supporting young people in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Atlanta and often does it for free and pays out of her pocket. amid the myriad of ways she supports her community, on several occasions she’s helped young people search for housing to rent their first apartment; she's coached them through the process and has given away all of her own furniture in the process to help support and set up her community to thrive. on top of this, i witness a lot of people asking for her to do stuff for free and she always does it.
she doesn’t share accolades given to her but i want to share that in 2018 she was an EbonyPower 100 Honoree. it’s important everyone know how they described her and her work: “Marshall makes the tradition of radical Black student organizing relevant today, integrating culture, leadership development, collective action and intergenerational community formation. The organization has become a community hub for the emergence of a generation of leaders.” she gives everything she has to everyone she connects with and everything she fights for -- this is why i am reaching out to you and your extended networks. can you help give back to her, and help put some money together to support her work?
i want to raise money for a down payment on a house, so she can finally have a place where she can continue to do this level of political support for movement leaders. she doesn’t know i’m raising funds to support and lift up her and her work. she has never asked for anything. being black in america comes at a cost. can you give? can you spread the word to your networks?
this would mean so much to to her. this support will help provide her stability in so many ways to allow her to continue lifting up community, and us all.
