Connections between individuals in a community can be the binding strength that draws people to a city or town. We believe keeping those connections is very important for our City of Durango. It is the mission of our group, In the Weeds
, to create meaningful connections between individuals within the hospitality industry. We hope to gather people within the service industry and create a safe, comfortable space for discussion about any and all topics. We believe it is important to enlighten others on the fact that they are not alone and we are here to listen.
The service industry can be challenging and relentless with long hours, a high stress environment, and low pay. These conditions can lead to other problems such as substance abuse, depression, and anxiety. There is a strong tradition in this industry that negatively influences staff from discussing these potentially life threatening issues. In a study done by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the accommodations and food services industry was in the top three industries for substance abuse, drug abuse, and alcohol abuse. we hope to reduce or eliminate these effects of service employees, leading to a healthier and happier lifestyle. Potential outcomes of this group are increased productivity in the workplace, motivation to create a positive work environment, and a boost in creativity with food, drink, and service. There is a large population of employees in Durango due to it having the most restaurants per capita in the nation. These factors have encouraged us to create this support group for industry members.
We are still looking for help with getting our 501(c)3. This takes time and most likely an outside party to do the legalities of the licensing. We have already gained support through the community, but with the nonprofit status we could reach even further! Anything helps and thank you all so much!
