Hello All. Thank you for taking the time to read this information I have laid out. My name is MacKenzi Matthews and I am a Junior at Baldwin Wallace University. I will be graduating with a Sport Management degree and a minor in Business Administration. As I am slowly, but surely approaching senior year, I have one incredible goal to accomplish. It has always been a dream of mine to travel to another country and work, in some way, to benefit the youth. As a varsity college athlete, I have experienced the connection that athletes gain through participation in sport. With that being said, I will be joining an organization called Great Commission United in South Africa to participate in a project to improve the lives of the youth around Cape Town. GCU is a sports (boxing and basketball) orientated project that aims to keep young people from surrounding areas of the Cape Flats away from gangs and crime and plugged into positive influences and aspirations. GCU recognizes that the reversal of gang culture and poverty begins at grassroots level. The project strives to enrich the children’s life experience and to ignite a desire of wanting more from their lives.
My service trip will be three weeks long (July 11th – August 5th) and I will be working an unpaid internship for this program. The internship consists of 45 hours per week coaching and after school tutoring children as well as project organization.
The grand total is $4,995.00 which includes:
- Roundtrip airfare from JFK airport to Cape Town, South Africa
- Housing
- Breakfast and dinner
- Internship set-up
- Strength and conditioning
- Service-learning activities
- Health insurance through GeoBlue
The deadline for split payments begins April 1st so I have a short term goal until my travel date! This funding will greatly bless my family and I.
I have also applied for two other scholarship funding programs in hopes to gain funding through there. Thank you, I am beyond grateful for your support and consideration!
