I'm Charlie McCoy, an Artisan Barber, entrepreneur and community activist. My passion for cutting hair and making people feel their best led me from my home town in Oklahoma City, to the streets of New York City where I took the grooming business by storm.
In 2020 I created The Grooming Alchemist, a nonprofit organization that provides mentorship and support for at-risk youth and adults in New York, starting in High schools in the Bronx. We exist to uplift our community, enriching lives with mental and emotional health support and life-building opportunities. We provide a holistic approach to solving the lack of focus on the root causes of being an at-risk youth.
Currently, we run activation events in District 9 high schools in the South Bronx, meeting with middle school and high school students, cutting their hair, and talking to them about their dreams for the future. School District 9 has the lowest high school graduation rate and the highest dropout rate in the state. Young men in this community deal with complex and stressful life experiences with the justice system, foster care, and many have experienced homelessness and food insecurity.
Each Grooming Alchemist activation event highlights successful entrepreneurs and artists in the New York community who share their journey following their passions. We meet with 10-20 students per activation and leave them feeling more confident, with fresh haircuts, and inspired to believe that they can achieve whatever they put their mind to.
Our goal for 2022 is to hold 8-10 activation events, meeting with over 300 District 9 students, encouraging them to pursue their dreams with intention and drive. With your help, we can uplift young minority men, pushing them to reach towards the things they feel most passionate about, both personally and professionally.
We hope you can join us in this journey to create change in our communities, starting with it's youngest minds.
