Playscapes for Georgetown Elementary Kids – Sensory Hallway – help us raise $2,300!
As part of our IB Cohort project, we are challenged to create a CAS project – emphasizing the ideas of community, activity and service (CAS). The goal of CAS encourages us to step outside the boundaries of a typical learning style and work within the community to learn and grow as a student in a completely different way.
Where our CAS idea began: We learned of a 1st grade Georgetown Elementary student named Colin, who wrote a persuasive letter to his principal as a classroom assignment requesting snowball targets on the playground. Colin’s awesome personality and some of his challenges with high-functioning autism inspired us to respond to his request. We learned how large motor activities can help him to regulate his body, which helps him focus in the classroom. So during our many snow days this past winter, three of us (Oliver, Lydia and Abbie) connected, took some inspiration from Colin and his love of Pokemon, and sketched designs, worked with scrap materials and started building targets for the playground. There were so many snow days, that not much winter was left by the time we could finish them. We revealed the targets to the 1st grade students in March, and they loved them! Their reaction inspired us and we want to do more.
Through Colin and his mom, we learned more about how sensory input can help ALL of the students during the school day. We did some research and learned that sensory hallways can function as an excellent “brain break” and how they can help children to sit still and focus for longer periods of time in the classroom.
We have worked with the principal, Mrs. Reagan, in selecting a sensory activity kit that the students at Georgetown will love! Our goal is to purchase and install the sensory hallway during this 2019-2020 school year. With any additional funds, we will purchase foam balls that can be used with the snowball targets year-round. You can learn more about the sensory hallway kit here .
