Insalata’s Relief Fund - Fuel the Community

The restaurant industry is being challenged in unprecedented ways due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mark and I have temporarily closed Insalata’s Restaurant in order to do our part to ensure the health and safety of all members of our community, as well as that of our staff. While we support the reasons for the closures, the impact to our employees is significant.

As the owners of Insalata’s restaurant, which has brought luscious food to the Bay Area for 24 years, we take our commitment seriously to care for our employees and to feed our community. We know that for the time being, we can’t fully accomplish either of these goals. But, with your support, we feel that we can do our part to help the most vulnerable among us.

The goal of this GoFundMe project is to raise $75,000 so that we can use the Insalata’s kitchen to produce nutritious meals -- under strict sanitary guidelines -- that would be donated to ExtraFood.org.  ExtraFood picks up and immediately delivers food donations from businesses to dozens of Marin nonprofits that serve food-insecure children, seniors, and families.

The need for this service is magnified during this time of crisis. Mark and I will be contributing our own funds to pay for the overhead required to operate. Therefore, one hundred percent of the funds donated will go to the cost of food and employee assistance. In support of this effort, some of our purveyors have offered to donate their products.

By doing this, we would be able to provide financial assistance to employees. Some of our employees are among the most vulnerable of our population - unable to work from home and without the safety net of a savings account or family members to take them in. They have been loyal and hardworking for years and now is a time for us to show our gratitude to them.

We plan to start this project in early April. Our goal is two months. We will make 150 meals daily to be passed on to ExtraFood. By only employing a small crew daily, we will be able to exercise social distancing within the kitchen. We will practice and monitor intense sanitation so that we will be confident of distributing safe, delicious food.

Creating and serving food has always been our means of connecting in a powerful way. During this time of crisis, many of us feel powerless to make a difference. However, we feel that working together, we can make an impact for our community. We ask you to invest in us in order to multiply the efforts of a few in order to help the ones who need it the most.  Thank you.

With Gratitude,
