Innkeeper Maureen's Memorial Fund



On December 8, 2017, our community of Civano lost a beloved friend and neighbor with the passing of Innkeeper Maureen Smith. Maureen and her wife Mare Pagel ran the Inn at Civano and so much more. Our community wishes to help Mare with Maureen's remaining medical expenses and also to create Maureen's Memorial Park and Garden in Civano to honor her many contributions to our neighborhood. Designs and drawings for the Park are being developed, a space has been picked out and volunteers are lining up to do the work once designs are approved. But we need more funds to make this dream a reality. A special donor has promised to match the funds raised for the park! Mare and Maureen have been wonderful friends and neighbors and supporters of those in need within the Community of Civano and beyond. Their 12 years of Annual Art & Quilt Shows have benefited the Civano Community School and other Neighborhood groups such as Aging in Community. Their summer concert series and other events have also benefited a number of individuals in need. They have regularly made donations to benefit community groups and our Civano school. Maureen is especially remembered for her beautiful smile, her kind and thoughtful nature, and her special root beer floats!

Maureen was diagnosed with end stage liver disease just after Thanksgiving 2017 and was being evaluated for a liver transplant at the time of her passing. Complications related to medical procedures and previous episodes of heatstroke also resulted in kidney failure from which Maureen was ultimately unable to recover. Medical expenses mounted during her long hospitalization as did expenses for managing the Civano Inn business from a hospital bedside across town. Please help our community honor this special lady.
