Injured Bird Rehabilitators of Massachusetts

Please help me in supporting two courageous wildlife rehabilitators here in Massachusetts, Kathie Frisbie of The Place for Wild Birds Inc., and the wildlife rehabilitator Alison Webber, of Wayland.  Together, these brilliant and compassionate women are helping nurse injured birds back to health.

Every few years, I come across an injured animal and try to save him or her--mammals or birds who have been maimed by cars or have otherwise been injured by the human artifactual world.  A seagull on a beach whose wing had been shattered by a BB from a BB gun.  A squirrel hit by a car.  A pigeon dragging a broken wing.   A robin lying in the road, dying.

A sane society would have medical clinics for wounded animals in every town and city.  Alas, because society routinely kills billions of animals each year, for food and entertainment, or as the collateral damage of our roadways, animals' lives are held to be cheap.  State authorities spend millions of dollars to promote hunting and fishing, but not a dime on wildlife rehabilitation and treatment.  Private veterinarians, meanwhile, are prohibited by law from treating wounded or sick animals.

So the task of taking in severely injured animals falls to the literal handful of volunteers in our state who are licensed to be wildlife rehabilitators.  These are nearly always women who, despite having full-time jobs elsewhere, feel so strongly about doing right by animals that they have turned their homes into field hospitals for birds or mammals.   To become a rehabilitator they must study emergency veterinary medicine, pass an exam, and pay a licensing fee.  Then, incredibly, they must pay for all of their diagnostic equipment, antibiotics, medicines, tools, and cages out of their own pockets. 

The two wildlife rehabilitators I am raising money for have worked tireless for many years on behalf of animals, without public recognition for their heroism and without adequate financial support.  So I decided to initiate this Go Fund Me campaign as my way of thanking them for their past help to me and to others in my state in rescuing songbirds and birds of prey.
