What?
'Inferno, Kid' is the story of a young man, Dylan, on the margins of modern society. His world is one of angst, bravado and desolation. The piece, presented as a one-frame animation, delivers an unvarnished social commentary with a hugely challenging main character.
Who?
William Priestley is the author and creative director of the project. He has worked with at-risk young people and their families for over 15 years in both the US and Ireland. Over this period he has contributed to national policy, presented before the OECD and spoken from the TED stage. 'Inferno, Kid' is an attempt to dramatise these inequalities and reach an even larger audience. It is a direct challenge to the numbers-based groupthink of addressing poverty.
When & Where?
The piece is set in and around 'The Street': an area based on four of the most marginalised communities in Limerick City, on the west coast of Ireland. These areas became synonymous with grinding poverty and gangland crime at the turn of the twenty-first century. The backdrop could be replicated in any modern city.
Why?
'Inferno, Kid' is about hope: the hollow shell that underpins criminal empires, the broken promises that betray impoverished communities and the defining characteristic of the human spirit.
How?
Our ultimate goal is to develop 'Inferno, Kid' into a full animation. With your help, our immediate aim is to complete a one-frame animation version of the story and enter it into fringe festivals, both national and international in 2019.

Traditional urban renewal/regeneration programmes have focused almost exclusively on physical infrastructure in Western cities: whether that be Cabrini Green (Chicago), Elephant and Castle (London), Ballymun (Dublin) or inner city Johannesburg. Between 2007-2016, Limerick Regeneration invested over €300m in four of the city’s most marginalised areas. Approximately 10-15% of that money went into social and economic programmes. The rest went into buildings. Taking families suffering from social problems out of one house and putting them in another house does not solve the problem. If people do not have hope, they had nothing to lose. The overwhelming majority of young people involved in crime are not making a large amount of money: nor do they have malice in their hearts. They are doing it because they have no hope. They are hopeless.
Inferno’ was the first part of Dante’s 14th- century epic poem, ‘Divine Comedy’. It opens with the poet lost in a dark wood astray from the way of salvation. Wandering in the darkness, Dante realises that three fierce beasts are stalking him, slavering in anticipation. Dante cries out for divine intervention. His prayers are answered by the apparition of Virgil: a poet who had died more than a thousand years earlier. The good news is that there is a way out of the dark wood. The bad news is that this way leads through the ‘Nine Circles of Hell’. ‘Kid’ is a colloquial form of address in Limerick. A friend or acquaintance would be warmly greeted with ‘Alright, the Kid’.
