The mission of Infant Clubfoot Appeal (ICA), set up in 2010 by Harley Street Consultant Dr Charlotte Hawkins, is to improve the life chances of children suffering from Club Foot, a birth defect that is readily cured.
The charity was formed when a volunteer working in Zanzibar (an island which is part of Tanzania) found a high incidence of Club Foot among new born infants in the hospital where she was working, but also found that treatment was completely inadequate, with the result that children were growing unable to walk and were often dying prematurely through the results of ulcers and infections.If babies are treated soon after birth it is possible to transform their lives with a low cost, high impact clinical intervention to re-align their foot. Infant Club Foot Appeal is working in Africa, bringing this treatment method to children with Club Foot.The charity works in cooperation with other local charities to support treatment with specialist supplies, training and education programmes.
