Hi everyone. I am a teacher at Warm Springs K8 Academy at The Warm Springs Reservation in the high desert of Oregon, east of the Cascades. It is a beautiful setting, and I have already grown to love these kids. They have been through a lot. The Reservation has been on a boil water order on and off for the last few years, and under Covid, threats of illness and rates of unemployment have gone up.
Currently, our 7th and 8th graders are at home, experiencing Comprehensive Distance Learning. I want to encourage them to read and to find enjoyment in reading; at the same time, I want to raise their awareness of Indigenous Artists and Writers. Reading graphic novels by Indigenous authors, of which there are many, is a great way to for these students to see themselves in what they are reading; to give them ideas of topics they might write about or explore in research; and to expose them to amazing Indigenous writers, in a format that is fun, and showcases great art.
I am hoping to buy each student a graphic novel. I will pick out 20 or so titles that are age-appropriate and highly rated. The students will choose from the available titles once purchased. With the help of other staff members, we will distribute the books to the kids. During the year we will complete various written and oral assignments so students can share the books, and maybe trade with others. Books range in price but most are between 15-20 dollars and I currently have 115 students. Any money left over will go to other school supplies like notebooks, pens, pencils, markers etc.
Please help me bring some joy to the students of Warm Springs K-8 Academy!
