Indiana State Historical Marker
The Indiana Historical Bureau has approved our application for a state historical marker to commemorate the 1903 Grave Robbing Trials in Fishers. At the turn of the century, medical schools in Indianapolis paid people to steal bodies from graves to be used as cadavers. It became a big business. Highland Cemetery, located on Hoosier Road, was the site of numerous grave robberies. One of those robberies helped shed light on the practice and it eventually led to a few high profile court cases. The aftermath of the court cases led the Indiana Legislature to change the law on how medical schools can acquire cadavers and helped to eliminate the practice.
It is the organization's responsibility to fund the purchase of the marker. The cost is $2950. All donations are tax-deductible.
This will be the first historical marker in Fishers, Indiana.
