Holly's campus visit abroad in the UK

Donation protected
That's me in the photo with the black hood on. We were excavating a WWII era site that sits directly on our campus at the University of Evansville. While I did enjoy this excavation, the archaeology of England and also northern Europe are my first loves. England has excellent universities in my area of study, namely the University of Bristol.  Helping me reach my goal of a visit would also give me an advantage in my applications for graduate school and the Fulbright scholarship.

This visit would provide me with the opportunity to meet with the professors and researchers with whom I would be potentially be working. I have already been in contact with a conflict archaeologist on campus at Bristol, and I would love to have the advantage of meeting with him personally before my studies begin. Meeting with the professor(s) would also allow me to establish a professional relationship with them, and could allow me to receive a Statement of Affiliation from them. (See more in FAQ below).

I am applying for a Fulbright scholarship to study conflict archaeology post-grad at the University of Bristol. Conflict archaeology deals with the remaining evidence of conflicts in landscapes and cultures. Before I show up in Bristol to attend/live for a whole year, I want to visit the campus and the area. It would also be beneficial to be able to see the layout ahead of time, and also get familiar with the town in general. I have never been to the United Kingdom, so a little visit there would also help relieve some of the stress of potentially moving half-way across the world.

While I am able to get funding for my current education, extra funds to embark on a pre-attendance graduate school visit are not available. My husband and I both work very hard to put me through school as an undergrad. That is where all of our extra money goes. I spend most of my free time researching scholarships and ways to further my education. This is my second time around in college. The first time, I earned an associates degree in legal assisting. I was a bit iffy about working in that area from the start, but I was encouraged to continue with it by my family. I originally wanted to study archaeology from the beginning, but I did not have the backing to attend college for that purpose. I did receive an advantage from that first college experience, so it was beneficial. I was able to use my excellent academic record at that first institution to receive an academic scholarship to my current university.

If you fund me for this very important trip, you will recieve photos and updates on my visit. You may also friend me on facebook in order to follow along with my adventure as well as communicate with me during that time. I would only be visiting the UK for a week, so I can be back in time for the beginning of my final year of undergrad study.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my request.

FAQ:

"Why don't you just ask your parents or other family members?"

I am a non-traditional student. My parents nor my family support me financially. I also have a much younger sibling that still lives at home and is getting ready to enter college this fall. If I had the means to save this money in a short period of time (3 months), I definitely would. I am swallowing my pride a bit by having a gofundme account.

"What is a Statement of Affiliation, and why is it so important?"

A Statement of Affiliation is a letter written by the academics at the University which I will attend. It basically says that they are with me on my research, and will take me under their wing. The letter validates a professional relationship, and will allow me to hit the ground running upon my arrival for study. In order to obtain one of these statements, I need to forge a strong relationship with the faculty. Being able to meet with them face-to-face will show them that I am willing to go to any length in order to show them how serious I am about my studies and my future. Obtaining this statement will give me an advantage on my Fulbright scholarship application as well.

"Why do you need this money by August 2014? Why are you just now trying to get this money?"

To be fair, I have been trying to get this money together for some time now. I have a medical condition that causes me to almost always have a pile of medical bills that need paid. This gofundme account was my last resort. I need the money by August so that I can visit the University of Bristol before the beginning of my final undergrad year. This will give me plenty of time to build the professional relationship with the faculty at the University of Bristol, and not have to be too pushy.

"I see you said you are applying for a Fulbright scholarship. What is that?"

A Fulbright scholarship is one that is reserved for study abroad in research, teaching, and graduate degree programs. It is awarded to serious students with high GPA's and a strong drive. The application process is lengthy and arduous, but the award is worth the trouble. The Fulbright scholarship would pay for my travel to Bristol in 2015 to study, living expenses, and all of my tuition. It is a prestigious and highly competetive award. That is why it is so important that I do everything in my power to show how serious I am.

NOTE:  I am also an artist.  In my reward levels, I offer some of my personal pieces.  It's not something I do lightly, since my artwork is such an intimate part of myself.  The pieces I have most recently created are called my Meditations Series.  They are the best quality, and are a good example of what you will most likely receive.  I am always creating new work.  You can view some examples of my work here:  http://noisemakesmehuman.deviantart.com/
