Give Hope to Unemployed Adventure Travel Workers

In a typical season Explorandes employs over 150 independent workers in the adventure travel industry as field staff who help us run our tours in Peru. All of them have been left without the vital supplemental income that tourism provides them and their families since the beginning of the state of emergency and border closures declared as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
If you have been on one of our adventure tours purchased either directly through us or through one of our commercial partners around the world, you have experienced first-hand the tremendous value and care that our staff in the field put into making sure that you are well taken care of during your high-altitude adventure. If you have not yet traveled with Explorandes, pitching in to help someone in need is all the more reason to plan a future visit and meet them when conditions allow. These experts at providing adventure travel services, many of them guides, cooks, porters and muleteers, make the bulk of their entire year's income during the 8 month tourism season which goes from March to October.
As the novel coronavirus outbreak and resulting government measures to control it took effect during the beginning of the 2020 season, the resulting wave of cancellations and sudden collapse of sales for the year has hit everyone in the sector very hard, particularly our field staff. As the aid packages announced by the Peruvian Government target mostly vulnerable urban populations, these independent workers who live mostly in rural areas are being left out. They are facing severe financial hardships and will continue to do so until we are able to resume the operation of our tours. We hope that this happens before the tail-end of the season, but some workers may not get a chance to be scheduled before the beginning of the 2021 season.
At Explorandes we have distributed an initial relief package to each member of our field staff who live in the rural areas of Cusco as a personal donation of our founder and have also received some voluntary donations from a few of our B2B partners (thank you once again!). These benevolent actions have inspired us to create the Adventure Travel Field Staff Relief Fund to help support our teammates in the field and their families during these difficult times.
This fund aims to benefit as many as 150 families living in different parts of Peru, where we operate most of our tours, mainly in Cusco, Lima, Huaraz and Puno. By no means does it come close to covering what they would have brought home under normal conditions in the regular season, but it will help them navigate the financial struggles ahead and more importantly, show them that people care about their well-being, just as they have cared for the well-being of so many travelers over the past 45 years we have been in business.
