Power Chair for Independence
Two years ago an autoimmune disorder, Behcet's Disease, began to impact my nervous system. While treatments have managed to slow the progression, permanent neurological issues have left me needing to use a wheelchair for various situations. My insurance covered a power chair, however, this chair is bulky, and cannot break down for travel.
One complication of my disorder has been gastroparesis, which is delayed gastric emptying. This causes severe nausea, pain, and vomiting. Public transportation can be very difficult. Where I live, I need to take at least two busses to get to the downtown area. I have to carry my bulky chair battery with me, and hope that the brain fog doesn't cause me to get on the wrong bus. (I've done that, several times, and it's not fun.)
Whill US makes an affordable power chair/scooter model, that would allow me to take the chair apart, and travel by car again. It would also make trips back to visit family, a lot more manageable. The Whill chairs arealso much tougher than the current chair I have, in terms of the environment.
Being sick shouldn't mean being alone or housebound. I'm still waiting on disability, and have been for 2 years. The wait for a court date in California is extremely long, and it's emotionally draining. I've researched similar power chairs, and ultimately Whill makes the most durable, at the price point, while also having the speed and battery life to really make adifference in my life.
