Independence and Help For Our Dad

I started off the year learning that I had stage 2 breast cancer. I went through aggressive chemo, then I had surgery, and am currently still going through daily radiation and chemo every few weeks. I haven't been able to work since February and through it all, my dad has been my champion and my support.  My dad was an amazingly active guy until about the end of June of this year.  He started having low back pain and it kept getting worse over the past few months.  Every doctor visit kept coming up with no answers and they kept sending him home with only a way to control the pain, but no explanation of what the pain was.  Without a wheelchair accessible van, getting him to each appointment just put him in further pain. We took him to an appointment at a back specialist on September 6th.  She did a nerve test on both of his legs and there was absolutely no activity which had the back specialist so concerned that she told us to get him over to the ER immediately.   After a long day at the ER and an MRI later, they discovered a tumor that had been eating away at his spine and they gave us the prognosis and probability that Dad would not ever walk again. He had emergency spinal surgery the next day and is still recuperating.  Imagine going into the doctor's office for back pain and then being told you are paralyzed; there were no words. Though it was initially a shock, we didn't want to get stuck in a place of helplessness and hopelessness because healing starts in the mind.  We started telling Dad about all of the changes that could be made to alter the house so that he could get around easily and all of the equipment that is available that can help him lead an independent life and help him get back to the quality of life he was so used to just a few short months ago.  He is currently healing and waiting to be moved to a rehab facility in Vallejo where they will teach him how to be independent and how to care for himself.  We love our dad and we would do anything for him, but it is so important for him to know that HE can do anything for himself.  That's where your generosity comes in.  We will have to move him downstairs and that will mean making some small conversions to our home so that Dad has a room of his own and an accessible shower.  We want to raise money for the important items that Dad will need to buy or rent when he comes home from rehab, like a motorized wheelchair, scooter, hospital bed, a side by side refrigerator so we can give him the lower shelves, but most importantly we want to be able to get him transportation that he can drive for himself, which is the epitome of independence for him.  In addition to raising funds for the equipment and items he will need to get back on his feet (if you know my dad, you'll know he would enjoy this little pun),  we are also asking for information on resources, discounts, or even, dare we dream, donations, for the items that we need to procure for him to make his homecoming as smooth a transition as possible.  Our dad means the world to us and we want to see him shine again.  Please help however you can and please spread this page far and wide.
