Restore Civil Rights for Cassidy Keith
Cassidy Keith is a 20 year old woman from Louisiana. She is a wonderful friend and Mother. Cassidy has some diagnosed learning disabilities, but she is a kind, articulate, and very capable of caring for herself. In 2017 Cassidy was “INTERDICTED” by her Mother. In Louisiana, a full legal interdiction strips a person of ALL CIVIL RIGHTS and is commonly referred to as a CIVIL DEATH. Cassidy is no longer allowed to make ANY decisions for herself. Nor can she make decisions for her infant daughter.
Although Cassidy’s Mother may believe that Cassidy should not have any rights over herself, there is a large community of family and friends that know and love Cassidy and know just what a capable and competent young woman she is! We believe that when it comes to people with disabilities that you should always PRESUME COMPETENCE. We believe that people with disabilities are just like me and you. And that they have the right to make decisions for themselves. Self direction is a right that should not be infringed on and their independence should be supported.
Cassidy’s story is heartbreaking. When she was Interdicted she was engaged to her boyfriend of two years, and she was 7 months pregnant with their daughter. Cassidy and her fiance had a home ready to move into, with a beautiful nursery for their daughter. On the day of her Interdiction she was not given a chance for goodbye. She was ripped from family and friends and has been kept away ever since.
Cassidy has cried out for help many times since that day. Begging for intervention from anyone who can aid her. Cassidy’s hopes and dreams for her future are no longer within reach and she has said she feels hopeless. We are committed to pleading Cassidy’s cause to the Court and hopefully provide the Court with pertinent information that was not made available to the Judge during her Interdiction trial.
