Roman's Medical Bills

Donation protected
I started this account in order to raise funds for my cat, Roman. When Roman was five years old, I adopted him from my local Humane Society. Now ten, he has been my best friend ever since. Everyone who meets him loves him. I have never met such a warm, loving cat.

This morning my sister heard him meowing outside, and when she went to let him in he had to drag himself inside. We immediately took him to the emergency vet, where they said it appears he has a pelvic fracture. The vet said they would keep him on fluids and under observation for 24 hours, but that alone cost $400. An xray (which he may need several of) costs around $140, and pelvic surgery will cost around (updated: 12/11/14) $2,000. The daily cost just to keep him there is $400. I am trying to be conservative with the costs we might need, I am planning to use all the financial aid money that I am recieving to go towards his bills.
My family has no savings. My mom could only offer a $100 downpayment on the bill so far, and we are struggling to find a way to cover the rest of the medical expenses he will need. If we cannot come up with the money to pay for his bills, the vet will put him down. Since being at the vet he is already looking better, meowing and alert and trying to stand. He is a strong and resilient cat, I know with treatment he could make it.

I only have limited money from my financial aid, and my student loans won't come in until January.

If anyone could spare even a dollar to go toward Roman's medical bills my family and I would be eternally grateful. Our home is not complete without him.

UPDATE: 12/11/14
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far. Yesterday we found out that we recieved a lot of false information and price quotes from the doctor working the night shift, so I have updated the goal and the information above. So we have great news. Our doctor that we had during the day was very helpful and clear about everything, including fees. Yesterday we had an x-ray done, and found out it was indeed a pelvic fracture. From my understanding, it appears his femoral head has become displaced from his acetebulum on the left side, and the left side of his pelvis has been moved inward. Our doctor recommended surgery as soon as possible in order to realign his pelvis and replace his femoral head in its correct place. Complications that occur if this injury is not corrected will involve not being able to pass waste. If his pelvic canal is too narrow to allow this, it will be fatal. He said that we should come back in for another x-ray in five days, and at that point I am praying we have reached our goal so we can afford the surgery his body needs. That being said, we are taking him home this morning. As the rate to keep Roman at the hospital is $400/day, the doctor has recommended a conservative care treatment at home with him. We have followed all of his recommendations, which include supplying Roman with a large, roomy kennel to limit his movement so he will not over exert his injury, but still be comfortable. The doctor said it is unlikely he will be able to use the litter box, seeing as he can not assume the position to do so, so frequent sponge baths and cleaning will be a must during his recovery.

Everytime we went to visit him yesterday he looked better and better each time. In fact, he even tried to groom himself after his x-ray, which was very promising. I am so proud of how strong he has been throughout all of this, and very loving to all the staff at the clinic. Even after the doctor examines him, and even though it hurts, he still has nothing but affection for everyone.

I wanted to do a breakdown of the costs for everyone so they know what medical bills we are trying to raise for. Roman's stay at the clinic yesterday was $400, and his x-ray was $140. When we return to the vet in five days, he will need another x-ray ($140). The surgery he needs was estimated at $2000, and recovery days in the clinic thereafter will probably also be $400. I don't know how many recovery days he will need, but I am planning for about four right now. This brings our total need to roughly 4,300. I'll continue to find out more information about costs, but that is the updated medical information as I have it currently.

I just wanted to say another huge thank you to everyone who has donated so far, and everyone who has spread the word about Roman.  My family and I are beyond grateful for everything.

Again, thank you all so much, the amout of support Roman has received is humblling. I am eternally grateful.

UPDATE: 12/16/14
The doctors left an abdominal hernia undiagnosed until today. Right now we only have enough funds to fix the hernia, leaving his broken pelvis uncorrected. His surgery is scheduled for Thursday, and we are really hoping to have raised enough to fix everything by then. Thanks to everyone for the continued support. Please share our story any way you can. It's been really hard, but he has been such a trooper.
