In over 30 years of working with communities and vulnerable groups in Africa, Latin America and Asia, I have gathered knowledge and experience in helping stakeholders to take their responsibility for a more inclusive and sustainable tourism.
With the help of the Radboud University in the Netherlands we are working on an educational book to share my knowledge and experience with students and everyone interested in responsible tourism. The chapters of the book are separate researches into different issues relevant for responsible tourism.
The chapters will include: Sustainable Development and tourism in theory and practice Human rights and tourism in theory and practice Lessons to be learned from the history on Sustainable Development, Human Rights and Tourism A comparative case study of the fight to protect children's rights in tourism A comparative case study on land rights and tourism A comparative case study on SDG 8 on Jobs and Economic Growth
The chapters they will be tied together by an introductory paragraph, conclusions and recommendations. We strive to publish the chapters of the book as separate articles in academic journals in order to reach as wide an audience as possible. For three of the chapters we have already found publishers.
The case studies will be carried out with local groups in three countries, covering as many continents: in the Gambia, in Myanmar and in the Dominican Republic. We will visit the communities I have worked with, to assess with them what progress has been made and to share their experiences. While there, we will not only collect this information, but also assist the local groups in taking the next step in their efforts towards a more inclusive and sustainable tourism.
The budget. For each field visit we will need co-funding for approximately 2000 euros (for travel and accommodation costs), and then we would need about 3000 euros to finish the research. This brings the project to a total of 9000 euros.
We will not wait until we have the total amount collected. Every time we reach 2000 euros a field visit will be carried out and an article completed. The book will be published when we have reached our goal.
Any help would be very much appreciated and not only will you receive a copy of the book, but your name (and/or your organization's) will be mentioned.
