Inclusive Microfinance for Women in Small Business

Donation protected
Women have always faced issues in business and having access to loans to grow the business. Women with disabilities face even more difficulties as they are not often included in the typical development structures. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, women have faced an even more difficult time creating economic opportunities, as access to smaller markets has been limited because groups are not allowed to meet, and because of the lack of knowledge and access to mobile finance services. This has led to the main problem of how can women still create economic opportunities within these new parameters in place because of Covid-19.

The organization is championing a new project that focuses on empowering female business owners who have been affected by COVID-19. It will include micro-seed capital and increased business training techniques through the already established Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) managed by the foundation. Although the VSLA’s are taking root in Uganda, there are very few actors that have put disability into context to ensure that disabled people join the mobilised groups. Also, we have noticed the gender gap of mobile finance use in the countries, which keeps lots of women excluded from convenient access to financial services. As part of WDF’s wider Women Economic Empowerment Programme, not more than four women with disabilities have been engaged; WDF is interested in increasing this number and integrating them into the organisation’s programming, with financial and technical support.. This is why we have come up with the project ‘Inclusion of Women with Disabilities in the Microfinance Sector: Rotating Savings and Credit Opportunities’.
