For nearly a decade, my work in Belize has focused on bridging resource gaps for children, particularly those from underrepresented communities. Through my non-profit and Beyond the Label, we have provided educational support, advocacy, and mentorship to over 150 children across the country. Now, we are expanding our impact by launching the our first disabilities camp for children in Belize, with a special focus on Dangriga and the Garifuna community. Dangriga, often referred to as the cultural capital of Belize, is home to a significant Garifuna population—an Afro-Indigenous group with a rich heritage of resilience, language, and traditions. However, like many marginalized communities, access to resources for children with disabilities remains limited.
This camp will offer specialized programs, workshops, and inclusive activities tailored to the unique needs of children with disabilities, ensuring they receive the support they deserve. By working closely with local schools and educators, we aim to provide culturally responsive services that honor the language and traditions of the Garifuna people while addressing the specific challenges families face. To make this vision a reality, we are actively seeking funding to collaborate with schools and local organizations, ensuring that children receive the necessary accommodations and resources. This initiative is not just about education—it’s about inclusion, empowerment, and ensuring that every child, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive within their own community.
