SF x Philly Artist Exchange Project

Incline Gallery is asking for your support to help grow our community and make one of our long time goals of making a new ambitious artist exchange project a reality!

Your support means the world to us! As we are developing within our small-scale model to reach beyond and begin to strengthening the ties between us,  we begin to participate in a bigger conversation. Your support to the arts here in the Bay Area means a commitment to strengthen our region's culture and release it from it’s local limits by providing both a place to host as well as send off our very own to grow and participate in other cities.

Incline Gallery & Traction Co. Philadelphia

Hey Bay Area and beyond! My name is Christo Oropeza and I am one of the co-Founders of our beloved Incline Gallery in San Francisco’s Mission District. I am a San Francisco-born artist working in multiple media, and after forming an art collective and finding limited opportunities for emerging artists in San Francisco, fellow artist Brian Perrin and I opened up Incline Gallery in 2010. Incline Gallery is  an alternative art space that fosters relationships between community and artists. We create opportunities for emerging as well as established artists to exhibit in a non-cube format that challenges and encourages experimentation in exhibition design. Our role continues to expand by facilitating new curators, as well as national and international partnerships with community based organizations.

PHILLY X SF Artist Exchange

The Philly x SF Artist Exchange is an effort to build long lasting relationships between two small art communities each striving to make a creative and cultural impact in their rapidly changing urban environments. The project started organically with a stroke of luck and timing, when I was able to meet Miguel Antonio Horn, one of the members of Traction Company art collective from Philadelphia.  Miguel and I immediately made connections about our relative cities and the challenges and similarities our artistic communities face. We both knew immediately that we had a powerful opportunity to work together in creating an exchange between Incline Gallery and Traction Company.  New opportunities await as these two cities begin to collaborate together, and I for one am excited to begin the work of making this all start to come to fruition.

Incline Gallery’s Growth

Incline Gallery is now reaching beyond our provincial borders to create relevant and dynamic programming to intentionally insert fresh blood in our local arts culture, as well as begin to grow our Bay Area artists and start exhibiting them in other cities. This is the beginning of a reflected change in Incline’s identity and forward momentum: we are committed to grow and cultivate our artists not just here, but beyond. Working as a small organization in the arts always presents its own challenges, and it is those challenges that have allowed us to strategize, approach, affect, and help influence our regional culture through our collective action and programming.  Our limits in what we thought to be possible became our strengths, which is directly reflected and mirrored in our exhibition design and programming at the Incline Gallery.

Who is Traction Company? (https://tractioncompany.com/)

The Traction Company art collective strives to create a community of artists who are dedicated to the ongoing growth of the space while simultaneously supporting the ambitions of it’s individual members. Through sharing tools and facilities necessary for making artwork, Traction Company promotes the exchange of the resources and knowledge of its members. Traction Company, is a very diverse sister-organization to Incline Gallery, we are both discovering our identities and hitting our strides in our contemporary contributions to the greater conversation in the arts.
